Thoughts of Christmas

When I was little my mother always baked at Christmas time. She baked fruit bars, brownies, chex mix and cookies. Lots and lots of cookies. There were chocolate chip, peanut butter, sugar, sometimes anise and my personal favorite, spritz. I'm not sure why I love spritz cookies so much. They are basically just flour, butter and sugar, but I have always loved them. As a child I was always amazed that little metal discs in the cookie press could turn cookie dough into beautiful shapes like this.
Or this.
Last night Sarah and I made spritz cookies. They are still a big favorite of mine. There is something about the sweet, buttery way they melt in your mouth that I love. Now we'll see how long they last. I predict not very long.

I'm running to the kitchen--getting the butter out. I'm like you, they bring back warm and fuzzy memories. Love the pics Sarah. Jan

I made spritz cookies last weekend; still have a few left hanging out here, but not many. I tend to only make the Christmas tree shape, though, as the rest are harder to get to come out right. My mom's cookie press has a plate to make camel-shaped cookies; I had her try that once, but the heads kept coming off.

My Spritz recipe is an old family recipe from Grandma Elaine (though I'm pretty sure it's older than she is) that I love.

The spritz recipe I use is the one my mother used, but I don't know where she got it. I need to ask her that.

We did have some problems getting some of the shapes to come out right. The secret is to make sure the cookie sheets are cool enough between batches. If they are too warm, the cookies won't stick.

We should compare recipes to see what the differences are, if any.

Sallie they look gorgeous! I have never heard of spritz cookies - we must call them something else here in the UK, or maybe dont have them. I shall have to make some though as today is my baking day - Stollen, mince pies, and icing of the Christmas cakes.

I love these! My oldest sister made these one year and sent them to us from Washington. We didn't grow up with a mom who baked, but Jayne (my sister) started her own cookie-making tradition. The Spritz were my favorite!

The photos are lovely!

Merry Christmas, Sallie & Family!
